Stray Shots: Music
I've been on an R&B-ish binge lately in terms of music. Lots of Mary J. Blige (mostly her upcoming album Breakthrough). Also been pumping some beautiful pop music, especially Robin Thicke aka Thicke. Here's some songs to enjoy.
Mary's new album, The Breakthrough, comes out next Tuesday. I've been listening to it for a week or two now and its alright. I think I agree with one review I read in The Guardian that it lacks the pain and struggle of her older work and that's what used to make Mary so appealing: her honest account of how shitty her life was.
However, there are still some songs that you just gotta enjoy if not for the perfection of Mary's ability to manipulate her voice. Sometimes you just need to ignore the corny lyrics that comes with it.
The first one is her current single. The second song is the 2nd track on the album and I just like the drums a lot and then the last song I'm posting from Mary is her collabo/rendition with U2 of U2's "One." That collabo turns out alright. It's not better than the original and that usually never happens with remakes, but I like it because the first time I heard it was back in December when Mary and U2 performed it on TV for a Katrina benefit. That was a powerful performance and still resonates now when I listen to it.

Robin Thicke aka Thicke aka Alan Thicke's (from Growing Pains) son. If all you know about Thicke is that he's Alan Thicke's song, you might easily brush him off. But wait...Alan Thicke is a straight pimp! I'm not joking. Aside from being the Dad (aka Dr. Seaver) on Growing Pains and taking in street punk Leonardo Dicaprio aka Luke, every time I've seen Alan on TV, he's always had the role of some smooth-talking ladies man. In particular I remember when he guested on Married With Children (I know...my taste in TV shows is atrocious as is the fact that I remember all of this stuff.) So given that Alan is such a pimp, it stands to reason that his son inherited some of that.
That would be a fat big "yes!" Thicke is back. He's got a new CD coming out soon and this one should get a bigger push than his debut A Beautiful World back in 2003. The Neptunes are behind him and he's got a killer first single. "I Wanna Love You Girl" is pure pop gold. Plus the video is perfect. I love any video on some beautiful tropical beach as well as any video that has asses percolating along with the drum line. Add to that the fact that his voice is Justin Timberlake-esque with a mix of the front man for Jamiroquai and that he's a pretty good looking dude (he used to look like a grizzly Legolas, but he's since cut off his long hair.) So here's his current single, his most well-known single from his first album "When I Get You Alone" and another track of his that I enjoy, "Flowers In Bloom."
