Job Search...A Downturn

So I guess I assumed that if companies didn't want to interview me, they would send me an e-mail declining my application. I mean, when we apply online, there are four responses they can give us: accepted, alternate, declined, or undecided. I've had to face the sad fact today that no hearing from some of them really means "declined." I guess they get a lot of applications, but does it take that much time to just send an e-mail saying, "Sorry, but we are declining your app." I mean, it's just courtesy to let me know. Fuck...it really sucks cause some of the companies I really wanted to have interviews with didn't even give me a first shot. I honestly don't know what to do.
